Juniper Networks Outlines Vision For Industry Transformation

Model for Integrated Network Transformation Provides Framework For Industry Recovery

Sunnyvale, CA - December 3, 2002—Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today outlined its vision for the transforming telecommunications industry with the announcement of The Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT). Fundamental to industry prosperity, MINT provides a business and network framework that enables service providers to transition from a commodity transport business model to a more lucrative, value-added services model. Juniper Networks is concurrently announcing several new capabilities that enhance the product portfolio throughout the MINT framework.

MINT outlines a holistic approach for revitalizing existing services and for the creation and delivery of new services. These existing services might include Public Internet, Frame Relay, ATM, and voice. By alleviating the capital risks associated with having to introduce new facilities for each new service, MINT facilitates the rapid creation of innovative, value-added services to mass and niche markets. Examples include online gaming, on-demand content delivery, and small business extranets. Simply stated, MINT provides a revenue-driven roadmap to a service-rich, cost-efficient, integrated infrastructure.

"The move to a consolidated IP/MPLS network as the foundation for the delivery of enhanced services is a key part of our network transformation strategy," said Bill Smith, chief product development and technology officer, BellSouth. "This design enables us to protect and build on our existing investments in ATM and Frame Relay while reducing operational costs. Juniper Networks' approach is consistent with our view of the future."

"To thrive, the telecommunications industry must transform from a commodity transport model to value creation," commented Scott Kriens, chairman and chief executive officer, Juniper Networks. "This requires a holistic approach, linking business imperatives to technology decisions and operational efficiencies. With the MINT, we're offering a framework to help the industry effect that transformation without capital risk."

According to strategic consulting firm CIMI Corporation, the US telecommunications industry will forego more than $32 billion in packet data service revenues over the next four years if it fails to modernize its network operations model. "Current practices won't support tactical large enterprise applications, nor the offering of data services to small-to-mid-sized businesses," said Tom Nolle, president of CIMI Corporation. "We've wrung out significant capital cost efficiencies, but left the largest cost component - operations - un-addressed. Profitability problems will continue until something really different is introduced to address them."

The MINT is derived from engagements with the world's leading service providers. It is designed as a catalyst for combining their network and service strategies into one cohesive model that addresses the imperatives of the operations, engineering and marketing functions. With the integration of Unisphere Networks, Juniper Networks is uniquely positioned to deliver on this innovative new approach through market leading competencies in all four of the MINT layers, including:

  • A highly scalable and dependable Bit Transport and Connectivity layer for assured packet delivery;
  • A Resource Segmentation layer, which enables scalable management of users as aggregated groups;
  • A Packet Processing layer for the composition of enhanced, custom user experiences through packet treatments including filtering, prioritization, encryption, etc.
  • A Policy and Control layer, enabling dynamic user customization of their services and integration with provider business systems.

These capabilities are delivered uniformly across the entire Juniper Networks product portfolio, including the ERX, M- and T-series routing platforms.

"Our plan to consolidate multiple networks onto a single IP/MPLS based architecture will enable us to reduce our operational costs," said Dave Garbin, vice president network strategy, Cable & Wireless. "In addition, this provides a foundation for the creation of separate service environments to more effectively support the evolving needs of our customers."

Expanded Product Portfolio Supports The MINT

Drawing on research and development facilities on both coasts of the USA, Juniper Networks today enhances its product portfolio, adding significant additional capabilities throughout the MINT:

  • ATM2 Physical Interface Cards (PICs) provide rich functionality to support the consolidation of Frame Relay and ATM services across the Bit Transport and Connectivity Layer. These next generation ATM interfaces are available now as 2-port OC-12, 1-port OC-12, and 2-port OC-3 PICs, and add path and connection shaping to the M-series and T-series platforms.
  • A new family of physical interface cards - Q-PICs, based on the latest Juniper Networks ASIC program, the Q Performance Processor. These M- and T-series PICs augment the Packet Processing layer with highly granular queuing, ultra-dense multi-level channelization, multilink channel bonding, rich instrumentation, and a full complement of queuing techniques. Q-PICs available in Q1 2003: 1-port channelized OC12, 10-port channelized E1 interface, and 4-port channelized DS3.
  • MPLS VPN enhancements to the Resource Segmentation Layer include: support for Layer 2 VPN and Pseudo Wire services across all platforms and for all access network types and IPv6 Layer 3 VPNs. Also announced today: production implementation of the emerging Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) standard for Ethernet services in 2003.
  • IPv6 enhancements to the Bit Transport and Connectivity layer: IPv6 over MPLS - based on IETF standards, this capability provides additional techniques to ease the transition from IPv4 to IPv6; production availability of the OSPFv3 standard, complementing previously announced IPv6 routing protocol support in BGP, IS-IS, and RIP. Juniper Networks is also announcing that the ERX platform will, in 2003, offer the industry's first IPv6 Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS).
  • Also announced today, at the Policy and Control layer: Juniper Networks intention to extend the SDX-300 Service Deployment System to control all platforms.
